Working Life of Salary Inadequate for UK Labor Force to Enter Most Affluent 10%, Analysis Says

Per fresh analysis, the median earner in the UK would require half a century of salary to attain the net worth of the richest 10% nationwide.

Expanding Wealth Gap Over Time

The analysis reviewed net worth data including the 2020-22 timeframe and found that during 2006-08, it would have taken 38 years' worth of average worker salary to enter the top 10th of the financial hierarchy.

A senior economist involved with the analysis observed: "Financial divides in Britain are presently so substantial that a average worker setting aside their entire income throughout their career would remain unable to reach the top of the economic scale."

Assessing the Economic Gap

The analysis discovered that the gap between the wealth of the typical individual and a person belonging to the top 10% was one million pounds in the pre-crisis period, but had widened to £1.3m in inflation-adjusted terms by recent times.

The researcher continued: "These gaps are doubly concerning as financial progression in Britain is restricted – those who commence life wealthy tend to stay wealthy, and vice versa."

Comparative Financial Divide

Although the financial disparity expanding in absolute terms, the share of complete net worth in the UK possessed by the richest households – called "comparative financial divide" – has been "broadly stable since the eighties," according to the research.

Throughout these years, overall assets in the UK increased dramatically from three times the annual GDP, to almost 7.5 times.

Contributors of Financial Divide

So-called "passive" increases, via increasing property values and variations in retirement fund assessments, were the key contributors of the expanding economic divide since 2010, as stated in the study.

These increases tended to accrue to senior citizens with real estate, the research shows – intensifying the generational financial disparity.

Intergenerational Financial Divides

The typical financial disparity between people in their early 30s and sixty-somethings increased over twofold in real terms, from 135 thousand pounds in 2006-08, to £310k.

Regional Disparities

There were also significant area-based disparities, with the average level of wealth in recent years reaching £290,000 in the southeastern region, where property prices have tended to rise rapidly, as opposed to 110 thousand pounds in the north-east.

COVID Era Consequences

During the pandemic, when countless laborers were supported by the public-funded employment protection, and health crisis restrictions curtailed consumption options, the data shows many households were able to save, enhancing their financial standing.

Higher-income households performed significantly better, nevertheless. "The median home in the poorest fifth saw their cash reserves rise by merely £80 throughout the health crisis (2019-20 to 2021-22), broadly the same as the two years pre-pandemic. Conversely, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their cash reserves rise by £4,200," the report finds.
