Users Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying such medications must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle changes.
