In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
