European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
