At least 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
